Ready to resign if BJD’s allegations on poll fund are proved: Union minister Jual Oram

Union minister and BJP leader Jual Oram on Sunday said he is ready to resign if allegations of discrepancies in his poll expenses affidavit, levelled by the ruling BJD in Odisha, are found true.

“The charges levelled by the BJD are false and politically motivated. There is no mismatch in my poll expense figures. I am prepared to face any probe. If the allegations are found true, I will step down as a minister,” he said.

“The allegation against me is false, fabricated and politically motivated. I challenge them (BJD) to take the matter to the court,” Oram said.

The BJD has also said it will move the EC and court seeking action against Oram.

The BJD’s attack on Oram came after the BJP sought Odisha governor SC Jamir’s intervention into alleged misuse of official machinery by the Odisha government to defend the poll expenditure case against the chief minister, who is also the BJD president.

BJP candidate from Hinjili, Devadanda Mahapatra, who was defeated by Patnaik, has moved the Orissa High Court alleging that there were discrepancies in Patnaik’s election expenditure document submitted to the EC.

The high court is scheduled to hear the case on Monday.

Stepping up attack on the chief minister, BJP Odisha unit vice president Sameer Mohanty accused the BJD of denigrating the constitutional mechanism in a desperate bid to save Naveen Patnaik and his image.

कोविंद को 7 पूर्व राष्ट्रपतियों से ज्यादा वोट मिले, प्रणब को पीछे नहीं छोड़ पाए

नई दिल्ली. राष्ट्रपति चुनाव में रामनाथ कोविंद को 7,02,044 वोट मिले। उन्हें 65 साल के दौरान राष्ट्रपति बने 7 कैंडिडेट्स से ज्यादा वोट हासिल हुए। हालांकि वे कलाम और प्रणब मुखर्जी समेत 6 राष्ट्रपतियों से आगे नहीं निकल पाए। बता दें कि इन चुनावों में अब तक सबसे ज्यादा वोट (9,56,290) के. आर. नारायणन को 1997 में मिले थे। वहीं, ऐसे चुनावों में अब तक की सबसे ज्यादा (99%) वोटिंग 2017 के राष्ट्रपति चुनाव में ही हुई थी। एनडीए को उम्मीद थी कि कोविंद को 70% वोट मिलेंगे। लेकिन वे 65.65% वोट हासिल कर पाए। किसे-कितने वोट मिले...

कोविंद को सबसे कम 48 वोट मिजोरम से हासिल हुए। वहीं, मीरा कुमार को आंध्र प्रदेश से एक भी वोट नहीं मिला।

Despite critical CAG report on military preparedness, Arun Jaitley says 'armed forces sufficiently equipped'

New Delhi: Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said that Indian armed forces are "reasonably and sufficiently equipped" to defend the sovereignty of the country.

The remarks from the Defence Minister came in the wake of a CAG report flagging that the Indian Army was facing a critical shortage of ammunition that can last just 10 days of war.

"Why don't we have arms and ammunition to fight more than 10 days of war," he asked. "The people are concerned. Please do whatever is needed to save the country."

Ripun Bora (Cong) raised the issue through a Zero Hour mention, saying major decisions for procurement taken during 2009 and 2013 by the previous UPA government, have not been approved by the present government.

A Rs 16,500 crore plan prepared by the Defence Ministry too has not yet been implemented, he said, adding the CAG had in its report pointed to "very bad condition of Indian Navy" with 38 accidents taking places in the last few years.

The safety organisation too has not been functional because of lack of approvals, he said.

Jaitley said the CAG report has 2013 as a reference point and there have been follow-ups.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu denounces EU's repeated criticism of Israel as an 'anomaly'

Budapest: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday denounced Brussels' repeated criticism of Israel as an "anomaly" and called on Europe to reassess its relationship with the Jewish state.

The EU has repeatedly condemned Israel's building of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and crackdown on civil society groups critical of the government.

Both men are right-wingers enamoured of US President Donald Trump and with a disdain for the left-leaning liberal global order bankrolled, as they see it, by the likes of US Jewish billionaire George Soros.

Netanyahu's trip comes at a sensitive time for Orban, who is under fire at home over his running battle against Hungarian-born Soros and praise of a Hungarian Nazi-allied wartime leader.

Many in Hungary's 100,000-strong Jewish population - one Europe's largest - have accused Orban, in power since 2010, of turning a blind eye to anti-Semitism or even encouraging it to stave off growing support for the far-right.

However Netanyahu defended Orban yesterday, insisting that Hungary, as the birthplace of modern political Zionism founder Theodor Herzl, was "at the forefront" of countries fighting anti-Zionism.

Centre can't decide what we eat, we won't abide by it: Mamata on govt's cattle directive

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday slammed the Modi-led government for enforcing the “unconstitutional” cattle slaughter directive and said that the move is “anti-secular and anti-federal”.

“My government will fight this unilateral measure legally because it stands to destroy the country's federal structure,” she said at a brief press meet here.

Amid the raging debate over the issue, police on Sunday registered a case against Youth Congress worker Rijil Makulti and his accomplices for slaughtering a calf in public in Kannur during 'Beef fest' organised across the state by the Congress and the Left to protest the Centre's ban.

Latching onto the issue, the NDA in Kerala decided to observe Tuesday as a day of protest against the incident.

Kerala BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan posted the video of the gory Kannur incident on twitter, calling it "cruelty at it peak" and said no normal person can behave in this manner.

"A case has been registered under Sect 120 A of the Kerala Police Act on the basis of a complaint of Yuva Morcha activist", Kannur SP Siva Vikram, told PTI.

BJP inconvenience for DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu
